Scott Devine was named the Director of
Athletics and Recreation in July 2000 after 15 years of Division I
experience at the University of Massachusetts and Tulane
University.
In addition to his AD duties, Devine sits on the
Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Board of Directors and is a
member of the Haverford Group. He recently stepped down as
the CAC president following a two-year term and prior to his
presidency, Devine served as the CAC vice
president from 2004 to 2006. He currently serves as president
of the Maryland Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics
(MACDA) after taking over the reins in the summer of
2008.
Since his hiring, Devine has taken the Department
of Athletics and Recreation to new heights. One of the
biggest accomplishments has been the renovation and expansion of
Somerset Hall into the much improved Athletics and Recreation
Center (ARC), which began construction in 2002 and opened in the
spring of 2005. He played a role in reworking the ARC design
plan to include a rock wall, more locker rooms, and a dedicated
space for cardio equipment.
In 2007, the Department of Physical Education was placed under the
athletics and recreation umbrella, leading to the doubling of
courses offered at half the cost. The SMCM intramurals
program has also flourished under Devine's
leadership with participation now averaging 800 students
annually.
Drawing from his marketing and promotions experience at Division I,
he developed a new Seahawk logo, word mark, and established
official team colors for all the athletic programs.
Devine early in his tenure led the iniative for
the first-ever full-time sports information director position and
first functional athletic website.
He began at Tulane in 1991 as assistant AD for athletic student
life and quickly rose to associate AD for athletic student life in
1994, senior associate AD for external affairs in 1995, and interim
AD in 1999. As senior associate AD, Devine
oversaw Tulane's scheduling, game management, broadcast rights,
licensing, marketing and promotions, sports publicity, corporate
sponsorships, ticket operations, and relations with Conference USA.
He was instrumental in establishing the Student-Athlete
Advisory Board, the Student-Athlete 3.0 Club and the Tulane
Mediation Team, a group of professional staffers trained to help
settle student and faculty disputes.
The Hyde Park, N.Y. native came to Tulane after six years at UMass,
the last three as director of academic support services for more
than 500 student-athletes. He received his master's degree in
sports management from UMass in 1986 after earning his bachelor's
degree in 1983 from the University of New Brunswick in Canada.
Devine and his wife, the former Karen Germano,
live in Leonardtown. The couple has two daughters
named Kelli and Kaitlin. Kaitlin is a sophomore at
Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia.
