When the 2010 campaign kicks off in the spring, Liam Bowen will enter his fourth season on the Seahawk coaching staff. Bowen will once again serve as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for St. Mary's.
The Silver Spring, Md. native has made quite an impact for the Seahawk pitching staff, consistently improving the team's ERA each season. Prior to his arrival, the team's ERA was 7.26 in 2006 but then dropped to 5.27 in his first year as the pitching coach. In 2008, SMCM boasted a 4.91 ERA, while a year ago the pitching staff sported a 4.60 ERA.
Bowen is a 2006 graduate of Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn. where he was a four-year letterwinner for the Scots as a left-handed pitcher. He led Macalester in strikeouts as a sophomore and senior, while posting a 6-2 mark on the mound as a junior. Bowen finished his career with 117 strikeouts, 11 wins, and nine complete games in 160.1 innings pitched.
This past summer, he served as an assistant coach with the Fauquier Gators of the Valley Baseball League. Bowen spent the summer working with pitchers from some of the best collegiate programs across the country, helping the Gators boast the fourth-best ERA in the VBL. The VBL is funded in part by a grant from Major League Baseball and is a member of the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball, a national affiliation of summer leagues.
During the summer of 2006, he pitched in the 22 & Under NABF (National Amateur Baseball Federation) World Series in Toledo, Ohio for the Carroll County (Md.) Rangers.
