St. Mary's City, Md. - Freshman forward Chris Quamina (Glen Burnie, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) notched a goal and an assist in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team to a 3-1 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Hood College Wednesday afternoon.
Today's win is the third of the season for the Seahawks (3-5-4, 2-1-2 CAC) and first since a 1-0 victory at Wesley College on September 13.
Quamina gave St. Mary's a 1-0 lead at 14:35 as sophomore midfielder Keith Hines (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) sent in a pass from 30 yards out which Quamina controlled at the edge of the box and then slid it past junior Shawn Fernholz (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) as he came out to break up the play.
The Seahawks went up 2-0 at 22:06 as junior forward Misha Simon (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) finished off a slot pass from Quamina. SMCM would go on to hold a 2-0 advantage at halftime.
Senior defender Chris Madrigal (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) afforded his squad a three-goal cushion as Madrigal converted a penalty kick at 47:27 for his first goal of the season.
Hood (4-8, 1-3 CAC) avoided the shutout when junior defender Carlin Rabie (Indian Head, Md./Lackey) found the back the net following a misplay by freshman Dan Gressang (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara).
The Seahawks outshot Hood, 20-8, for the match and tallied two corner kicks to the Blazers' one.
Gressang registered three saves in improving to 2-2-3 on the season, while Fernholz recorded 10.
St. Mary's will be back in action this Saturday, October 11 when the Seahawks travel to Salisbury, Md. to take on Salisbury University in an important conference tilt at 2:00.
