St. Marys Cruises to Shutout Win

St. Mary's City, Md. - Sophomore forward Ted Scharfenberg (Holbrook, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) notched two goals and two assists in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team to its first Capital Athletic Conference win of the season with a 9-0 shutout of Gallaudet University Monday afternoon.
The Seahawks (3-5, 1-2 CAC) owned a 3-0 advantage at halftime behind goals from sophomore forward Chris Quamina (Glen Burnie, Md./Mount Saint Joseph), freshman midfielder Ryan Plaisance (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg), and sophomore forward Matt Grady (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson). Quamina netted the game-winner just 14 seconds into the start of the contest.
St. Mary's tacked on six more in the second half as Scharfenberg, freshman midfielder Andrew Ragusa (Lusby, Md./Patuxent), junior captain Kevin Seeger (Gaithersburg, Md./Northwest), junior midfielder Keith Hines (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown), and Quamina all found the back of the net.
Quamina finished with two goals and an assist.
The St. Mary's defense held Gallaudet (0-8, 0-2 CAC) to just one shot, while the Seahawks fired off 55.
Junior Paul Spranklin (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) and sophomore Matt Savopoulos (Scaggsville, Md./Reservoir) combined for the team's third shutout of the season.
Sophomore Poloko Qobose (Gaborone, Botswana/St. Vincent School for the Deaf) racked up 19 saves in the loss.
St. Mary's will return to action this coming Saturday, September 26 as the Seahawks travel to Owings Mills to take on Stevenson University in another CAC tilt at 2:30 p.m.
Gallaudet will travel to Dover, Del. to face Wesley College in conference action under the lights this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
