Wesley Rolls to CAC Victory

St. Mary's City, Md. - Freshman forward Joshua Chellah (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) tallied a goal and an assist as the Wesley College men's soccer team posted a 4-1 win over St. Mary's College of Maryland Saturday afternoon in the Wolverines' Capital Athletic Conference opener. All the action took place in the first 45 minutes.
St. Mary's (2-5, 0-2 CAC) struck first at 19:01 as sophomore forward Ted Scharfenberg (Holbrook, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) found sophomore forward Chris Quamina (Glen Burnie, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) with a short pass from the left and Quamina flicked it into the lower right corner.
Forty-two seconds later, freshman forward Luis Rivera (Rockville, Md./Rockville) converted on a penalty kick to knot it up at 1-1.
Sophomore midfielder Kyle Long (Delaware, Ohio/Buckeye) gave Wesley (4-3, 1-0 CAC) a 2-1 lead at 24:47 as Long ripped a shot from 25 yards out into the lower left corner.
Chellah followed up with an unassisted goal of his own at 28:44 as he put in a loose ball in front of the goal.
The Wolverines notched a three-goal cushion at 43:21 behind freshman defender Cory Hennessy's (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) first collegiate goal as Hennessy completed a feed from Chellah.
The Seahawks edged Wesley in shots, 12-11, and in corner kicks, 7-5.
Junior goalkeeper Nick Talarico (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands) recorded four saves in the Wolverine win, while junior Paul Spranklin (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) made three stops in the loss.
St. Mary's will return to action this coming Monday, September 21 as the Seahawks host Gallaudet University in another CAC tilt at 4:00 p.m.
Wesley has a couple of days off before entertaining Gallaudet on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
