St. Mary’s Tops Catholic in Season-Opener

Washington, D.C. - The freshmen shined as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team notched its first victory over Catholic University in 14 tries as the Seahawks posted a 102-98 victory Friday afternoon.

Catholic (0-1) had captured the previous 13 meetings before St. Mary's (1-0) broke the streak this afternoon.

Freshman Billy DeBoissiere (Columbia, Md./Atholton) claimed three gold medals in his collegiate debut for the Seahawks.  DeBoissiere went 1:52.11 to take first in the 200 free before touching the wall first in the 500 free in 5:05.71.

DeBoissiere then led a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 breast as he finished in 1:00.27 followed by junior Aaron Page (Keene, N.H./Keene) in second at 1:07.31 and junior captain Nico Pinto (Lima, Peru) in third at 1:09.18.

Freshman Jesse Stottlemyer (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg) also fared well in his first collegiate meet as Stottlemyer finished first in the 100 back in 58.22, while swimming the first leg of the first-place 200 medley relay.  Stottlemyer picked up a second place finish in the 1000 free (11:27.57) as well.

Joining Stottlemyer on the 200 medley relay were Page, sophomore Joe Kelly (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron), and junior captain Jackson Webb (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown).

Webb bested the field of six swimmers in the 50 free with his time of 23.30 while taking second in the 100 free in 52.35.  Page nabbed a second place finish in the 200 IM in 2:13.92.

The quartet of sophomore Ron Michael (Sykesville, Md./McDonogh), junior Kalvin Day (Hagerstown, Md./N. Hagerstown), and freshmen Dirk Rousseau (Washington, D.C./St. John's College) and Chris Coghill (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) took second in the 200 free relay.

The Seahawks will be back in action tomorrow as St. Mary's travels to Arlington for its Capital Athletic Conference opener with Marymount (Va.) University at 2:00 pm.
