Derek Sabedra will begin his fourth season as the head coach of the men's and women's tennis teams in 2009-10 after taking over the reins in August 2006. In his three years at the helm of Seahawk tennis, Sabedra has guided both squads to a combined three appearances in the CAC semifinals. He has also mentored five Seahawks to six All-CAC honors, including two first team awards.
Prior to his first stint as a collegiate head coach, Sabedra was the head coach at Great Mills HS from 2002 to 2006. He led the Hornets to a 15-3 record in his last campaign, earning Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC) Coach of the Year honors. Sabedra captured St. Mary's County Coach of the Year accolades in 2005 after mentoring Great Mills to a 12-5 mark.
He has held numerous coaching positions in the tri-county area. Sabedra has also held two head coaching positions in basketball, leading the Great Mills boys' basketball team in 2004 and The Calverton School Lady Cougars in 2005. He is employed within the St. Mary's County Public Schools system as a behavioral specialist as well.
Sabedra continues to promote the sport of tennis in St. Mary's County and currently serves as secretary of the St. Mary's County Tennis Association.

A Southern Maryland native, he received his bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland at College Park in 1992. Sabedra earned his master's degree from Bowie State University in 2000.
