St. Mary's City, Md. – Tori Poffenberger '16 (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) and Kate Somerville '16 (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) will be heading across the pond Saturday night for the World Cup Lacrosse Festival. The Festival will take place during the FIL Rathbones Women's Lacrosse World Cup in Guildford, a town in Surrey, England.

New England Lacrosse is sponsoring two Division III Elite teams to compete in the Open Division of the World Cup Festival. Poffenberger and Somerville were selected to the D3 Elite South team due to their postseason accolades as seniors in 2016. The Seahawk duo is part of an eight-person contingent representing the Capital Athletic Conference as Salisbury University and University of Mary Washington both have players on the squad.

Somerville expressed her excitement about the Festival. "Having the opportunity to travel, play with Tori again, and be a part of the World Cup event is something I never expected to have after graduation in 2016. I'm so excited that we get to represent St. Mary's and D3 women's lacrosse internationally, and promote the growth of the sport in other countries. It will be so exciting to get back on the field."

As a senior, Poffenberger became the first Seahawk to earn All-America honors since 2009, and the all-star midfielder led the CAC in goals in her final two campaigns. Somerville, a top defender for St. Mary's, was a two-time All-CAC selection who ranked in the top-three in the conference in caused turnovers in 2016.

Under the leadership of Emerson College women's lacrosse head coach Kathryn Egizi, the D3 Elite South team will play three games on July 17 and three more the next day in hopes of gaining a spot in the championship on July 21.
