Southern Virginia Sweeps Seahawk Volleyball, 3-0, in CAC Action

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team played their second straight home match Friday night but came up short in a 3-0 Capital Athletic Conference loss to Southern Virginia University.

St. Mary's 0, Southern Virginia 3 (19-25, 19-25, 16-25)

How It Happened

  • Junior outside hitter Meghan Kelley (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) continued her strong play with her second straight double-double (and third of her career) on a team-best 12 kills and 10 digs.
  • Junior captain Marissa Dangler (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) picked up 18 digs while sophomore defensive specialist Emily Benedict (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) contributed 11.
  • Junior captain Mia Griffiths (La Plata, Md./La Plata) had a near double-double with 16 assists and seven digs while adding two kills.
  • St. Mary's jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first set but a 6-3 spurt by the Knights gave them the lead for good and Southern Virginia rolled to the 25-19 win after boasting its biggest lead of 19-13.
  • In the second set, the two sides battled back and forth, trading the lead three times. The turning point came when the Knights used a 4-0 push to break an 18-18 score and then closed out the set with three straight set points.
  • Southern Virginia never trailed in the final game and led by as many as nine before wrapping its second straight match win.

  • Hannah Krauss – 4 kills, 2 block assists
  • Adair Watson 3 block assists
  • St. Mary's finished the match with 5.0 team blocks on 10 block assists.

For Southern Virginia (19-7, 6-2 CAC)

  • Penny Gwynn – 13 kills, 4 digs
  • Hannah Allred – 13 kills, 13 digs, 4 service aces
  • LaRee Crockett – 35 assists, 8 digs, 2 service aces
  • Mykynli Knight – 19 digs
  • The Knights hit .224 for the match while serving up eight aces and posting 5.0 team blocks.
