Ashland, Va. – It was a rough start to the 2015 campaign for the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks dropped a non-conference doubleheader to the host Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jackets, 6-2 and 14-0.
Randolph-Macon (2-0) posted a 5-0 lead after two in the first game before the Seahawks (0-2) avoided the shutout with a run in the third off the bat of senior outfielder Paul Roemer (Westminster, Md./Westminster). Roemer singled to centerfield with two outs to bring home sophomore infielder Zach Rowe (Davidsonville, Md./Calvert Hall) who led off with a single then stole second.
The Yellow Jackets went up 6-1 in the fifth before St. Mary's notched its second run in the seventh as sophomore outfielder Nick Raimondo (Davidsonville, Md./South River) scored an unearned run during a double play after reaching base on an error and advancing to third on singles by first-year outfielder Bennett Garner (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and Rowe.
Senior captain Brad Dioguardo (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin), Rowe, and Roemer led the team at the plate with two hits each while junior southpaw Michael O'Neill (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on two hits in 2.0 innings with four walks and one strikeout.
In the second game, R-MC tallied four runs in the third, six in the fourth, and four in the fifth for the shutout win.
Five different Seahawks recorded a hit in the loss while senior captain A.J. Norby (Wayne, Pa./Shipley) registered the loss with 2.2 innings of work, giving up four earned runs on four hits with four walks and one strikeout.
The Seahawks hope to garner their first win of the season tomorrow afternoon when they wrap up their three-game series with Randolph-Macon at noon.
