WINCHESTER, Va. - Two fourth quarter goals from junior Meghan Ronan propelled the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team (8-0) past the Shenandoah University Hornets (6-2) on Wednesday (Sept. 25) afternoon in non-conference action. The victory keeps the Seahawks perfect with an 8-0 record on the year.

St. Mary's College - 2, Shenandoah - 1

How It Happened

  • Both squads started slow on the offensive end in the first quarter as the Hornets managed to fire off the lone shot in the stanza. In the second quarter of action, the Hornets controlled possession on their offensive end of the field for the majority of the time and eventually found the back of the cage in the 26th minute.

  • Shenandoah kept their momentum from the second quarter and transitioned it into the third, outshooting the Seahawks 9-3. However, both squads failed to tally a score and the Seahawks headed into the final stanza trailing by just one goal.

  • St. Mary's College rose their intensity in the final quarter of play and eventually scored two unanswered goals for the victory. The first score came in the 48th minute when Ronan fired a shot into the back of the cage for the unassisted goal. Next, Veronica Maring played a well-placed feed to Ronan who went on to record the game-winner in the 53rd minute. With seven minutes remaining in regulation, the Seahawk defense shut down the Hornets to seal the victory.

Inside the Box Score

  • As mentioned, Ronan led the Seahawks on the offensive end with two goals. Ronan now leads the Seahawks with 19 points and seven goals on the season. Maring also recorded one point on the afternoon off an assist. In goal, Kelbey Egerland kept the Seahawks in the game with a season-best 11 saves on the afternoon.

  • As a team, the Seahawks were edged in shots (19-13) and penalty corners (9-3).
