Seahawk Men's Soccer Rebounds with Shutout Win over Capital

Salisbury, Md. – Seniors Sunny Chhatani (Lima, Peru/Indian Creek [Md.]) and Luke Barber (Washington, D.C./Walt Whitman) helped the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team notch their first win of the 2017 campaign, posting a 2-0 victory over Capital University Saturday afternoon at  the Elmer Lord Memorial Classic hosted by Salisbury University.

How It Happened

  • The first half featured 13 shots and eight corner kicks but neither side got past the defense in the first 45 minutes.
  • Chhatani broke the scoreless draw 10 minutes into the second half when his free kick from the left side of the box found the back of the net.
  • St. Mary's received an insurance goal with 10 minutes left in the match after Barber headed in first-year defender James Carter's (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) cross from the left baseline.

For the Seahawks (1-1)

  • Scorers: Chhatani (1 goal); Barber (1 goal); Carter (1 assist)
  • Goalkeeper: Patrick Paolini (career-best 4 saves, 0 goals allowed, 90:00)
  • St. Mary's finished the contest with 11 shots (four on goal) and four corner kicks.

For Capital (1-1)

  • Scorers: None
  • Goalkeeper: Justin Niswonger (2 saves, 2 goals allowed, 90:00)
  • The Crusaders picked up nine shots (four on goal) and eight corner kicks, including six in the first half.


  • Today's win evens the series history between the Seahawks and Capital at 1-1.

Up Next for the Seahawks

  • Sept. 5 vs. Washington College – Seahawk Stadium – Home-opener – 4:00 p.m.
  • Washington College holds a 7-4-3 advantage in the series history; however, the Seahawks posted a 1-0 victory last season in Chestertown.
