Seahawk Men's Soccer Blows Past Southern Virginia

Buena Vista, Va. – Forwards Emmanuel Oppong (Tema, Ghana/Blake [Md.]) and Tyler Kurack (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) each scored twice as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team exploded for a season-best six goals Saturday afternoon. St. Mary's posted a 6-1 Capital Athletic Conference road win over the host Southern Virginia University Knights.

How It Happened

  • The Seahawks scored early and often, boasting a 4-0 lead at 23:12 after tallying all four in a span of less than 11 minutes.
  • Junior captain Juwan Kearson (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) put St. Mary's on the board first by converting a penalty kick in the 13th minute and then assisted on Oppong's first tally of the day at 15:41.
  • Senior forward Adam Kratz (Owings, Md./Northern) notched his third of the season at 17:07 by beating a defender before finding the back of the net.
  • Oppong then headed in senior captain Sunny Chhatani's (Lima, Peru/Indian Creek [Md.]) corner kick for a 4-0 halftime lead.
  • Southern Virginia avoided the clean sheet in the 49th minute as Nathan Allen put in an unassisted goal.
  • Kurack collected back-to-back goals in less than four minutes as junior midfielder Aaron Tanenbaum (Reno, Nev./Walt Whitman [Md.]) assisted on both goals.

For the Seahawks (9-5-0, 5-1-0 CAC)

  • Scorer: Oppong (2 goals); Kurack (2 goals); Kearson (1 goal, 1 assist); Kratz (1 goal); Tanenbaum (2 assists); Chhatani (1 assist)
  • Goalkeepers: Zack Haussler (0 saves, 0 goals allowed, 45:00); Patrick Paolini (2 saves, 1 goal allowed, 33:48); Cristian Reyes (0 saves, 0 goals allowed, 11:12)
  • St. Mary's ended the contest with 27 shots (12 on goal) and picked up six corner kicks, including four in the second half.

For Southern Virginia (4-11-0, 1-5-0 CAC)

  • Scorers: Allen (1 goal)
  • Goalkeeper: Colin Flynn (6 saves, 6 goals allowed, 90:00)
  • The Knights only took six shots (three on goal) and earned three corners.


  • St. Mary's remains undefeated against the Knights at 5-0 since the series began in 2013.
