Women’s Basketball Prevails Over Mary Washington in Defensive Battle

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball (6-16, 2-9 CAC) prevailed over the University of Mary Washington Eagles (10-12, 4-7 CAC) 48-34 on Wednesday (Feb. 6) night in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Seahawks recorded 39 of their 48 points in the second half in the victory.

How It Happened

  • The first and second quarters were offensive struggles for both squads. The Seahawks only managed to tally nine first half points, but stayed in the game by limiting the Eagles to just 14. The Seahawks and Eagles both shot under 21 percent in the first half of play.

  • The third quarter was dominated by St. Mary's as the Seahawks outscored the Eagles 22-8. St. Mary's started the third stanza with a 9-0 run to jump out to a 18-14 lead at the 6:08 mark of the quarter. Gina Seifert accounted for four points during the run, while Kobey Chaney added a layup and Katie Robey drained a three-ball. The Seahawks held their four point advantage with 2:08 remaining in the third, but extended their lead to nine, thanks to a made three-pointer from Hallie Persell and jumper by Robey. St. Mary's and Mary Washington traded scores and the Seahawks took a 31-22 lead into the final stanza.

  • The Eagles knocked down five-straight points in the beginning of the fourth quarter, cutting the Seahawk lead to four. Next, Seifert took matters into her own hands, tallying five-straight points to bring the Seahawk lead back to nine. Leading 36-29 with 6:37 left in regulation, St. Mary's jumped out to their largest lead of the night with seven unanswered points that took four minutes off the clock. St. Mary's converted on their free throws for the remainder of the game for the victory.

  • Seifert tied her previous season-best mark in points, knocking down 19 to lead the Seahawks. Additionally, Seifert made an impact on the defensive end with four steals and one block.

  • Janey Mathisen added ten points and Cameron Mangold tallied eight.

  • Kobey Chaney led St. Mary's in rebounds with eight and added four points. Robey hustled for a team-high six steals.

  • Jordan Pamlayne led the Eagles with eight points and nine rebounds.
