Seahawks Fall to Captains in Regular Season Game

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The St. Mary's College women's basketball team (3-19, 0-8) fell this evening (Feb. 12) to Capital Athletic Conference competitor, Christopher Newport University (19-4, 8-0) in their second matchup of the season. The Seahawks lost with a final score of 89-49.

How it Happened

  • In the first quarter, the Seahawks held a defensive stride. Both Kyaira Priest and Stephanie Howell snagged four rebounds apiece with Gina Seifert recording one. Seifert was also able to lock in one block with Howell contributing one point and Priest recording two points. The Captains entered the second quarter with an eleven-point lead.

  • Priest entered the second quarter with an offensive drive, leading the team with five points. Caitlin Mays recorded two points, with Seifert and Howell tallying one apiece. Despite snagging four rebounds total, the Seahawks could not put a stop to the Captains' offensive stride. Christopher Newport was able to record 31 points during the quarter to take a significant lead.

  • Entering the second half, Howell stepped into an offensive stride sinking seven points for the Seahawks. Seifert was able to record three alongside Mays who contributed one point. Priest's passing set up her teammates nicely to record two assists for herself. Seifert led the team in rebounds with four total alongside Mays and Howell who snagged three each. The Captains were able to sink 17 points in the third quarter, bringing the score to 62-23 entering the fourth quarter.

  • Seifert pulled through and led the Seahawks with eleven points, alongside Kelli Jenkins who added eight. Priest was also able to include four points and Howell recorded three. The Captains tallied 27 points compared to the Seahawks' 26 points in the final quarter of the game. 

Inside the Box Score

  • Seifert recorded a double-double with 15 points and ten rebounds. Howell contributed 12 points and seven rebounds and Priest tallied eleven points and seven rebounds. Mays, Priest, and Howell contributed two assists apiece. 

  • For the Captains, Sondra Fan led the team with 13 points.
