St. Mary’s College Downed by Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va. - St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball (3-20, 0-9) fell this afternoon (Feb. 15) to Capital Athletic Conference competitor, Southern Virginia (16-7, 4-5). This was their second matchup of the 2019-2020 season which concluded in a final score of 76-52. 

How it Happened

  • Caitlin Mays started off strong by leading the Seahawks in points with four total during the first quarter. Stephanie Howell and Gina Seifert contributed two points apiece as well. Seifert snagged three rebounds for the Seahawks which was good for best on the team during the first quarter. The Knights were able to record 19 points during the first quarter, which put the Seahawks at an eleven-point disadvantage entering the second quarter.

  • Kyaira Priest stepped into an offensive stride in the second quarter, leading the Seahawks in points with five total. Seifert recorded four points alongside Kelli Jenkins who had three and Howell who had two. The Knights outscored the Seahawks by three points in the second quarter, with the help of Seifert snagging two rebounds. Entering half time the Seahawks trailed, 36-22. 

  • Seifert truly shined in the third quarter sinking 12 points for St. Mary's College. Howell and Priest recorded two points each as well. The Seahawks were able to capitalize off of free-throw shots this afternoon and locked in an 80% free-throw shooting percentage in the third quarter. 

  • In the final quarter of the game, Southern Virginia outscored St. Mary's College 20 to 14. Priest led the Seahawks in points with seven total, alongside Jenkins who put up three points. Seifert and Mays both contributed two points apiece. Chyna Landon, Seifert and Mays recorded one assist apiece. Unfortunately, Southern Virginia's lead was too far to overcome for St. Mary's College and the Knights were victorious.

  • Seifert led the team in points this afternoon with 20 total and rebounds with eight total. Mays recorded the most assists against the Knights with four total. 

  • Savanna Christensen, for Southern Virginia, was the biggest offensive threat this evening, leading the team with 22 points.
