St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior midfielder Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) registered her second career milestone of the season Thursday afternoon as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team posted a 16-8 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Marymount (Va.) University.
Newman, who tallied her 150th career point last Tuesday, picked up her 100th career goal as she finished the afternoon with season-bests of five goals and six points. Her last goal of the day was Newman's 100th. She now has 100 goals and 61 assists for 161 points as a three-year starter.
St. Mary's (9-2, 3-0 CAC) scored four straight in less than six minutes for a 4-0 lead at 20:20 behind four different scorers. Marymount (2-8, 0-3 CAC) responded with back-to-back goals to cut the lead in half at 10:23. Another Seahawk run, this time three in a row, gave the hosts a 7-2 advantage at 2:53 as three more players notched their first goal of the day.
First-year Abby Wescott (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) notched her second of the day with 22 seconds left in the half before Newman tallied her second on a free position shot with two ticks on the clock. St. Mary's headed into halftime with a 7-3 as Newman and Wescott led their respective teams with two goals each at intermission.
The Seahawks carried the momentum from the end of the half into the second stanza, rattling off four more to complete a 5-0 run and stake a 12-3 lead at 22:07. Marymount trimmed the deficit to seven at 20:12 with back-to-back goals in 35 seconds. Newman tallied two consecutive goals to rebuild a nine-goal lead at 14:16. Three Saint players scored in a 3-0 run for a 14-8 SMCM lead at 7:17.
Junior captain Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) and Newman each the found the back of the net in a 14-second span to seal the 16-8 win with 6:12 remaining in the game.
St. Mary's outshot the Saints, 36-19, while dominating the draw controls by a 17-6 margin as Newman came away with a game-high six draws. Marymount edged the Seahawks, 20-18, in ground balls. Wescott finished with two goals for the Saints while senior Megan McGuirk (Baltimore, Md./Mt. DeSales Academy) tallied three points on a goal and two assists.
First-year Lexi Thorne (Riva, Md./Pallotti) improved to 2-0 on the season with eight stops, including seven in the second half, while junior Tylar Abrams (Laurel, Md./Catholic) notched nine saves, including six in the first half, in Marymount's second straight loss.
St. Mary's will be back in action this Saturday, April 4th when the Seahawks welcome Wesley College to Seahawk Stadium for a conference game at 1:00 p.m. on Senior Day. Before the game starts, St. Mary's lone senior – Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) – will be recognized for her four-year dedication to the Seahawk women's lacrosse program.
