St. Mary's Women's Tennis Drops Match to Catholic

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team opened up their home schedule Saturday afternoon with The Catholic University of America. St. Mary's (0-2) fell 6-3 to the Cardinals (3-1).

How It Happened


  • Catholic staked a 3-0 lead as CUA swept doubles action.
  • Junior Claire Bodine (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) and sophomore Alden Grosh (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg) had a tight match with Erin Cole and Brooke Simonson at No. 1 singles but succumbed to an 8-6 setback.


  • The Cardinals went up 4-0 with a default win at No. 6 singles.
  • First-year Marianne Hershey (Keedysville, Md./North Hagerstown) captured St. Mary's first point of the match as Hershey beat Hannah Clarke, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
  • Grosh then beat Lauren Edwards, 6-3, 7-5 at the second flight before St. Mary's cut the deficit to 4-3 as Bodine took down Colleen McLaughlin, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 1 singles.
